Borussia Dortmund are “not interested in selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang” as sporting director Michael Zorc told kicker after it has been reported by German and English tabloids that FC Arsenal are willing to splash out €40 million for Aubameyang. Whether these reports are based on proper research or born from the need to scramble up content during the off season is hard to tell, but Arsenal have good reasons to be interested in Aubameyang, who was Dortmund’s top scorer of the 2014/15 season, netting in 25 goals in 46 matches and providing 11 assists. Terrific numbers from the 26 year old Gabonese striker, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Saint Etinne for 13€ million in 2013.
There are several reasons for BVB to keep hold of their star striker, as selling him would be a mistake. Aubameyang is not only one of the fastest football players on the planet, but he has also been BVB’s most consistent attacking player of the last season. He is a centerpiece in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the next season and as Dortmund’s striker-situation currently looks the only reliable source of goals upfront. There is still a question mark behind Ciro Immobile’s future at Borussia Dortmund and Adrian Ramos will miss the first parts of the season due to his injury.
Even if BVB were to cash in on Aubameyang, they would find it hard to find a suitable replacement, that will be an immediate hit – especially with the recent history of Dortmund strikers needing time to find their stride. The Gabonese who has a fable for flashy haircuts and fast automobiles has also bigger ambitions than FC Arsenal, as he revealed in L’Equip that he is looking to breach the 20 goal-barrier in the next Bundesliga season to appear on Real Madrid’s radar, as he is dreaming to play for them at some point in his career.
But most importantly, Borussia Dortmund are not to mess with the bromance of Aubameyang and Marco Reus. The two have a great bond on and off the field and it will be in Reus’s interest for his friend to stay around for a while longer. Keeping your star players happy is one key to success.
