Borussia Dortmund announced the signature of 19-year-old Mikel Merino on Monday. The Spaniard will join BVB from Segunda Division side CA Osasuna in July and has been handed a 5-year-deal contract, which is valid until 2021. The central midfielder has thus far won the U19 European Championship with Spain in 2015 and is an integral part in Osasuna’s midfield (22 league matches, 1 goal). The reported fee lies around 3.7€ million and can go up to 5€ million with bonuses according to Kicker. The sport magazine also states that the inquiry of Merino is not targeted as an eventual replacement of Ilkay Gündogan.
Sporting director Michael Zorc has been quoted on the club official’s homepage: “Mikel is a great talent of the Spanish youth development. We’re happy that we were able to realize this transfer.”
The 1.88 m (6ft1) tall midfielder is looking forward to the new challenge in Germany: “Borussia Dortmund is one of the most reputable clubs in Europa. I’m honored to play for this club in the future, which stands for a special kind football and is famous for its impressive stadium and atmosphere.”
