Borussia Dortmund remain busy on the transfer market, making their fifth signing for next season in 18-year-old Turkey international Emre Mor.
The versatile attacker, who has signed a five-year contract at the Westfalenstadion, joins from Danish club Nordsjaelland for an undisclosed fee reports in Germany have put in the €4 million range. Turkish media have reported the deal to be worth €16 million, but it seems highly unlikely that Dortmund would pay this much up front for such a young and inexperienced player.
Mor, who’ll turn 19 two weeks after the final of Euro 2016 was a surprise inclusion in the Turkish squad, having only debuted in the warm-up against Montenegro on May 29. His meteoric rise this season is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that he only debuted for the Turkish under-21 side in March.
Making the Euros squad after playing only 13 matches of professional football in Denmark shows just how talented Mor is. Dubbed “Turkish Messi,” the 18-year-old is a strong dribbler who uses his low centre of gravity at only 168 cm/5’5 to make defenders miss with regularity.
Adding Mor’s great balance and close control of the ball, he can be a real weapon in one on one situations or even take on a few players at once. When dribbling he rarely uses complicated tricks but rather trusts his body feints, acceleration and the occasional Croqueta to get past opponents.
The close control of the ball, especially with his strong left foot, and the fact that he touches the ball very frequently when dribbling, enables him to change directions and speed of his actions rapidly.
While Mor has all the tools to be a good passer, his decision making is something he and Tuchel have to work on. Often the 18-year-old will shoot from distance or take on one player too many instead of choosing a simple pass with a greater chance of succeeding.
He can play as a central forward and on the wings, but one would have to imagine he might end up playing as a secondary striker for Dortmund because of his lack of physicality.
Mor told Dortmund’s official site: “BVB is a great European club with an exceptional fan base. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and I can hardly wait for the season to begin and to play my first game for Borussia.”
Mor joins Marc Bartra, Ousmane Dembele, Mikel Merino and Sebastian Rode as Dortmund’s new recruits for next season.
