Borussia Dortmund want to renew Julian Weigl’s contract, which is due to expire in 2019, this fall.
In 2015, Borussia Dortmund signed a 19-year-old central midfielder from second division side TSV 1860 Munich for a measly fee of €2.5 million. Julian Weigl, who will turn 21 in September has been the shooting star of the previous season. His market value as sky-rocketed to €18m (as per Transfermarkt) and his impressive first season has earned him a call-up to the Euro squad.
His calmness on the ball and oversight in the middle of the park have made the midfielder indispensable for Thomas Tuchel. Weigl has been one of the most integral parts in the possession based style of his coach, as he excels in quickly and seamlessly shifting the ball across field.
Due to the absence of Ilkay Gündogan, Weigl’s role in Dortmund’s midfield will gain even more significance this season. The youngster’s professed goal for this season is to develop a more vertical side to his game and to evolve from a ball distributer with a 91%-pass completion rate to a playmaker.
Early glimpses of the new season have shown that Weigl will do exactly what he reiterated in a recent interview with Deutsche Welle.
Unsurprisingly, Borussia Dortmund want to extend the deal of their prodigy sooner rather than later.
BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told WAZ on Wednesday: “Of course we want to extend his contract.”
Binding the defensive midfielder long-term would be an important step forward for the club’s sustainability. There is little doubt that the gem Borussia Dortmund unearthed from the second division will play on a world-class level on his position after a very mature and consistent first season.
Watzke added: “The negotiations will start this fall. And I’m sure that Julian knows what he has here.”
Weigl has already been linked with moves to Real Madrid and PSG. He said in May, however, that he pays little attention to rumours.
“I’m aware [of the rumours], but that’s all. My agents try to keep those subjects away, as there is written a lot. There is no reason to indulge in this matter, because I am very happy where I am now,” he told Transfermarkt.
In this writer’s opinion, Julian Weigl will extend his contract soon. After all, the extension will raise his salary significantly in accordance to his importance on the field. It will be a happy day for every Dortmund fan when it happens.
