Moritz Leitner appears to have found a new home, with reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claiming the midfielder is on his way to Lazio.
It has become clear Leitner would have to move on from Dortmund to progress after making just two Bundesliga starts under Thomas Tuchel last season. Even the departure of Ilkay Gündogan hasn’t strengthened his case for regular football in midfield, with Sebastian Rode and Mikel Merino brought in from Bayern Munich and Osasuna respectively this summer.
The talented midfielder has stagnated since his first team emergence under Jürgen Klopp five years ago, with a two-year loan spell at VfB Stuttgart containing frequent managerial changes and a poor footballing education. Leitner remains a huge talent, though, and is still just 23 years of age. Good performances in his limited opportunities for Dortmund last season only proved he still has the ability most fans saw when he forced his way into Klopp’s plans as a teenager.
Those same fans have wondered where Leitner could head off to this summer after he barely last season and posted a Snapchat from London earlier this week. Excused from the Bad Ragaz training camp to negotiate with clubs, he may have found his new home in Rome, Italy.
If the deal does go through, let’s hope it’s the fresh start Leitner badly needs.
