Mats Hummels, Soraktis Papastathopoulos and Julian Weigl all had to sit out Thursday’s public training session due to a stomach bug. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Hummels and Sokratis are supposed to feature in Friday’s final training and should be available for the top clash between VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund – but it could be a chance for Neven Subotic, if his colleagues don’t make it back in time.
The match against VfB Stuttgart has shown that Borussia Dortmund can play without Julian Weigl in midfield since Gonzalo Castro’s ascent in form, but it would be far from ideal. Missing both Hummels and Sokratis would be even less ideal in the fixture of the previous DFB Pokal final. The Wolves have scored 20 of their 23 goals at home and will test BVB’s defence with verve on Saturday night.
Sven Bender and Matthias Ginter or Neven Subotic could step in, if Hummels and Sokratis were to miss but Dortmund’s already frail defence would be in danger to be painfully exposed by Dieter Heckings side. Especially Subotic will hope to take advantage, as is yet to feature in a Bundesliga match since match day 2.
In more positive news, Nuri Sahin and Erik Durm participated in Thursday’s team training. If all goes well, both could still have a cameo before the turn of the year.
