Slowly but surely, it’s time for Ilkay Gündogan to make up his mind. He extended his contract only until 2016, when a complicated back injury kept him out for almost a whole season. The one-year-extension always meant, that he postponed his decision to either leave or make a commitment to Borussia Dortmund. Reports are suggesting, that the German midfielder is tending towards penning a new deal with BVB.
After Marco Reus extended his deal until 2019, Michael Zorc is now trying to lock down Ilkay Gündogan as well. A success would immense for Borussia Dortmund, since Gündogan is simply a world class player, when he isn’t injured. Perhaps it really was a signal to the rest of the team when Reus committed to BVB? Without a doubt it raises the likeliness, but will it be enough to convince the defensive midfielder.
Make no mistake, just like Reus, Gündogan can raise his finger and Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Madrid and Bayern München will splash the cash and he has the quality to fit in everywhere. I’m sure the German international would already play for one of the above mentioned clubs, if it wasn’t for his injury. If he now decides to stay for a few more seasons, it would be a blessing in disguise, as Borussia Dortmund will have enough linchpins to build sustaining success on.
Yet, will Echte Liebe be enough once again? Gündogan will get a raise, when he decides to stay in black and yellow, but he’ll get a bigger salary plus a higher likeliness to win silverware elsewhere. For now I remain highly skeptical and Dortmund will probably keep their habit of losing one essential player each season. Kicker already reported that BVB are keen to have a clarity by March. They will certainly not keep him for another season without a contract extension, so it will be now or never for Ilkay Gündogan.
What do you think? Will Gündogan make BVB fans happy and extend his contract or will he play in a different shirt come next season?
