Borussia Dortmund’s left-back Marcel Schmelzer will miss the start of the Rückrunde against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The match will also come too soon for Sven Bender and Nuri Sahin.
Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel revealed on Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash that Sven Bender and Marcel Schmelzer won’t be fit in time to play against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Though the Dortmund coach has still hopes that Schmelzer will be able to feature in the friendly against Union Berlin on the following day, which leads to the conclusion that the regular will be back on the pitch against Ingolstadt on the following match day. If it’s any consolation Schmelzer’s replacement Park Joo-ho has shown positive sparks in the three friendly matches Borussia Dortmund played during the winter break. The absence of Sven Bender and Nuri Sahin is not as hardhitting as they are not regular starters for the time being, but with Shinji Kagawa and Adrian Ramos just recovering from illness, BVB’s thin squad might quickly turn into an issue.
Which is why it’s to little surprise that Thomas Tuchel said in the news conference, that Borussia Dortmund are definitely on the outlook to add a couple more players to their squad before the transfer window slams shut until summer. The Dortmund coach said on on the topic of the currently hottest linked player Yunus Malli: “Mainz manager Christian Heidel said everything there is to say on this topic [namely that BVB are showing interest]. We have to be patient.”
Given that Tuchel said that his side will be able to manage the first two weeks with the current size of the squad, the signature of Yunus Malli materializing on deadline day seems to be the most likely scenario. Mainz 05 will have to find a replacement first before agreeing to Borussia Dortmund’s more lucrative offer than the €9.5 million buy-out clause Malli possesses for the upcoming summer transfer window.
