Borussia Dortmund’s training ground had a different look to it on Wednesday due to the international break, with a number of first-team players scattered across the globe.
Borussen on international duty
A total of 12 players is away with national teams: Ginter, Hummels and Gündogan with Germany; Weigl and Stenzel with German youth outfits; Park with Korea; Piszczek with Poland; Aubameyang with Gabon; Kagawa with Japan; Bürki with Switzerland; Ramos with Colombia and Sokratis with Greece.
That leaves Weidenfeller, Subotic, Bender, Schmelzer, Castro, Leitner, Januzaj, Mkhitaryan and Hofmann as the only players who can practice in full.
Reus, Durm and Sahin updates
Marco Reus ran laps around the pitch after team training and looks to be on schedule to play against Hamburg on November 20. His torn muscle fibre doesn’t seem to be a lingering problem.
Erik Durm, meanwhile, returned to portions of team training for the first time since he underwent knee surgery in the summer. The full-back is on track to perhaps return to the squad in the last few games of 2015.
Nuri Sahin, out since March, ran laps as well and also seems to be edging closer to a return to team training. The plan should be that Sahin gets up to speed in training camp during the Bundesliga’s winter break.
Weigl misses first under-21 game
Borussia’s impressive defensive midfielder Julian Weigl is nursing a slight knock that will keep him out of Germany’s U21 match against Azerbaijan. He’s currently in treatment with a bruised knee in Dortmund, but will meet up with the team for the bout with Austria next week.
Tuchel unhappy with Bundesliga schedule-makers
Borussia’s head coach Thomas Tuchel voiced his displeasure over his side’s schedule in the Bundesliga in an interview with club legend Norbert “Nobby” Dickel.
I think it’s very, very, very unfortunate that we have to play, away from home, on the Friday following an international break for the second time this season. I find that extremely incomprehensible, since we’re the team with the most games, who have to play Thursdays and Sundays all the time. We’ll have to enter the plane on Thursday. On Tuesday there are international games, on Wednesday there are international games. I find it far from ideal.
