Is Juventus’ interest in Henrikh Mkhitaryan substantiated or just a ploy to cause some turbulence before the two teams meet in the Champions League in February and March?
Juve CEO Giuseppe ‘Beppo’ Marotta has confirmed that the Armenian midfielder is on his list: “Mkhitaryan is a player who would work well within our project. Yes, he is on our list, but at the moment he is just a hypothesis.” Juventus have been keen to sign Armenian’s footballer of the year 2011-2014, when he was still playing for Shakhtar Donetsk.
Though there is absolutely no chance Henrikh Mkhitaryan will leave the Westphalians in winter. His agent Mino Raiola has told Mediaset that his client would be a good fit, but a transfer was not on the cards. “He would definitely suit Juve and should be playing in a top-10 club. He could bring something extra to the Serie A, but I don’t know whether Serie A can afford him. Dortmund might be struggling in the league but they don’t have financial issues. It is going to be very difficult, almost impossible, for any club, not just the Italian ones, to buy him.”
It wouldn’t make any sense at all for BVB to sell Mkhitaryan in the winter transfer window. His crafts are very much needed to get back to the top and there is not a replacement lining up for him.
Yet it might be worth a thought of selling Mkhitaryan in summer. By then Juventus might have the sufficient funds to finance the deal – as the departure of Paul Pogba seems to be only a matter of time – and Dortmund can think about an alternative. After all the Armenian hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. His half-series in 2014 was subpar with 2 goals and 1 assist in 20 games, as his dire form certainly is a factor in BVB’s troubles.
The melancholic Armenian was one of the few to have a vacation and a proper preseason, which is why his atrocious form came as such a shock. If Mkhitaryan continues to be unconvincing on the pitch, Borussia Dortmund should think about a different strategy.
For example Roberto Firmino. has been linked to the black and yellows a couple of times and certainly suit the Dortmund midfield. But the let’s just hope ‘Mishitaryan’ will get his act together and finally unfold his potential in 2015 to transform into ‘Magictaryan’.
