It’s official! Marco Reus signed a new contract running until 2019 with Borussia Dortmund – certainly a day to celebrate.
Marco Reus announced it himself on twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

“Hey guys, I’m pleased to announce, that I’ve extended my contract until 2019. Your Marco.”
The best news imaginable for the club right now and without a doubt it’s Dortmund’s greatest achievement to have a star player commit his career to the club in such tough times. Dortmund fans can be sure that they will see the world class Marco Reus in his prime unlike Mario Götze or Robert Lewandowski.
“Marco Reus can define an era in Dortmund just like Uwe Seeler has done at Hamburg or Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. That Marco has opted for BVB amid a sporting crisis shows he truly identifies with the club and that makes us very proud.” Dortmund boss Watzke said on the club’s official website.
And there is all reason to be proud. There have been several offers from Europe’s most prestigious on the table with guaranteed silverware and salaries BVB simply couldn’t match, yet Reus listened to his heart and put pen to paper in Dortmund. On facebook the starlet wrote: “I’m looking forward to the future at BVB, backed by our outstanding fans. My heart decided, so let’s get it started, we want to achieve a lot, not only this season!” – Echte Liebe. This decision shows how great Reus’s identification with the club is and will only make him even more popular with the fans.
With Reus’s extension release clauses haven gone extinct in the current Dortmund squad, as BVB announced in an ad-hoc news.
Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA (“Borussia Dortmund”) and its player Marco Reus extend their employment contract as professional football player that originally was due to expire on 30th June 2017 preliminary and as of today until 30th June 2019.
Thus, no player employment contract of Borussia Dortmund anymore contains an option of a player to preliminary terminate his contract for the event of a transfer to a third football club (so called “exit clause”).
This contract extension will go down as a mile stone in Borussia Dortmund’s history, because the club finally managed to pin down one of it’s major assets on and off the pitch and it looks like they can sustain their success after all. Most Dortmund fans, the Yellow Wall crew included, were already prepared for a Reus exit after this season.
Dortmund’s icon staying for good can have a very positive trickle down effect. It’ll be a great argument for the club to persuade other players to either extend their contracts or to attract new players, as BVB can now ensure to have a top player in their ranks. It’s also a signal to the Bundesliga, that Borussia Dortmund are to be reckoned with and won’t so easily fall from grace after one hapless season.
Besides, it’s just fun to watch Marco Reus play football. It’s a big day for Borussia Dortmund and might even give them a nice extra push to get their ‘turn around’ in the Bundesliga.
