Borussia Dortmund had to grind out a 2-1 win away to feisty Augsburg to remain Bundesliga frontrunners. Read the post-game quotes here.
“We’re happy with the result. This was the worst match since I’ve been the coach at Dortmund. It was never easy today. In the first half, we found a lot of space but couldn’t capitalise because we weren’t playing well enough. In the second half, we stopped playing football altogether. Each team has two of these games per season, which is why I’m very happy that we won today.
“We could have scored two or three more goals at the end of the match but we also could have conceded one. Which is why we brought on Ömer Toprak. In the second half, we didn’t play any football but were just sitting on our lead instead.”
…on Shinji Kagawa’s stunning goal:
“That’s pure quality. He executed it just the way he planned it.”
…on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s poor game:
“Auba is an important player for us. He has already scored eight goals; He has always helped us. Today, he didn’t play well. One-on-one, header, penalty — usually he converts them into goals. He also has two games per season, where things aren’t working out for him. Today was his first one.”
…on omitting Mario Götze from the squad.
“He is not injured. Mario wanted to play but I told him that I didn’t want that today. He was out for five months and we are nursing him back to form carefully. First he got to play 45 minutes, then 60. Today it would have been his third match within a week. That would have been too much. It was an important game today but there are more vital games ahead for which we need him.”
“The englische Wochen took a toll on us. You could see that today — especially in the second half. The coach told us ahead of the game that we must show the mentality to win this match at all cost. We battled hard and we won. We weren’t always focused, though, giving the ball away cheaply or just lumping it forward. Thus the match got really tough for us.
“Augsburg pressed enormously well. If we look at the table, it’s a nice read, but it’s still too early for it to indicate much. Games like today’s, in which you have to fight and overcome the tiredness, are the important games.”
“It’s never easy to win in Augsburg. We have learned that over the years. Augsburg are in good form, boasting a lot of confidence and you could see that in their performance today. We wanted to win this match – no matter how. Aubameyang scored so many goals in recent weeks and years, a missed penalty happens.”
