Borussia Dortmund have won the cup!
Here’s how head coach and players reacted to the club’s first major trophy since 2012.
Thomas Tuchel: “Right now I’m empty, completely empty. This was such hard work. It was not our best match but that does not matter at all. We did it! A huge compliment to my team. We started so well, scored the goal and had so many opportunities and structute in our game. But then we stopped playing football and everyone had the feeling that we had so much to lose all of a sudden. We conceded a goal and were lucky not to go behind. We really needed the half-time break. It was the same in the second half, we scored our goal but let off, played a long of long balls. But nobody needs to talk about that anymore, we won.”
Tuchel on his contract: “I want to stay, I want to keep working with the team, I want to honour my contract. We will talk like we did last season and see how that goes. I believe it will be open-ended.”
Marcel Schmelzer: “It was not a great game, no question. But in a final that does not really matter. We showed we wanted to win by all means. In the end we won the Pokal and put a finishing touch on our season. We can be immensely proud of that as a team. We knew how important it was to score that second goal after the equaliser. We’ll take a penalty in that situation.”
Marco Reus: “Every footballer wants to win trophies. That is why I am immensely proud that it finally happened today. It was a long, winding road. Looking at the game honestly, it was a bad game from us, perhapst the worst of the campaign. But that does not matter at all, we returned the cup to Dortmund! It was a season full of ups and downs. We got back every time, grew closer together – it was unbelievable. Everybody has earned winning this trophy, just everybody, starting from the kit-men. The final was a microcosm of our season.”
Roman Bürki: “We are over the moon. The task was bigger than we perhaps thought. We started great but let off afterwards. Regardless, at the end it only matters that we won this game. We have come back from behind so many times in the last few weeks. This trophy is the crowning jewel of our campaign. I have never experienced so many things during one campaign, both on and off the pitch. The team has grown incredibly close. It was not easy. The team grew closer with every experience. We can be so proud.”
