Thomas Tuchel: “We started really well, but our crosses were too inaccurate to go in front. We then lost our certainty a bit, with good pressing from Hoffenheim. The goal we conceded did its bit. With the substitution of Illy [Ilkay Gündogan] and his shot that hit the post there were signals that the game wasn’t over yet.
Tuchel (on turning the game around): “We invested a lot physically. I’m happy that we remained calm, that we played with quickness and we upped the pressure. Of course you need that goal to get the special atmosphere, both on the pitch and in the stadium. It was a superb feeling seeing Adrian and a great goal. It was a very important victory. We know what we delivered and are completely happy. This Hoffenheim doesn’t have much to do with the Hoffenheim that is second-to-last.”
Roman Bürki: “I blocked the first shot, but we weren’t ready for the rebound. It was my fault for not clearing the ball better to one side. It was unfortunate that the ball then went through my legs. However, I still thought that we would go on to win. In the second half, we remained calm and maintained possession well, and ultimately were able to pick the lock by the end of the game.”
Ilkay Gündogan: “Coach asked me this forenoon how I was doing. I was doing good, but it wasn’t perfect. That’s why I was on the bench at first. I didn’t mind, since I noticed on Thursday in Porto that my illness isn’t gone completely just yet. It just wasn’t enough for more than 45 to 60 minutes. I could and wanted to give it my all in the second half, though. We turned the game around and I’m very happy with the day.”
Gündogan (on the winning goal): “It was hugely liberating. Adrian [Ramos] pushed through superbly with his head. The lad deserved scoring again. It was his time. Moritz [Leitner] also did well after his substitution. We can bring on a lot of quality from the bench. Coach can be very happy with the personnel situation at the moment. No matter who gets thrown in, we can count on him. It was a great feeling to turn a game that demanded so much mentality around.”
