Borussia Dortmund once again left it late but came away with a point away from home, drawing 1-1 with Cologne on Matchday 14 of the Bundesliga. Here is what the head coach and players had to say after the match (sources: BVB, Sky):
Thomas Tuchel: “We started really well. Then we’re really sloppy defending Cologne’s goal, it came through our carelessness. We had to dig into the game and increase the risk in our play. We were rewarded for our efforts at the death.
We had to absorb a lot of hits out there today. All three changes were forced by injury. It was an intense game, sometimes that’s the way it goes. At the end we have to accept that it’s just the one point on the day, we’ll take that.
There are a number of reasons for our lack of consistency. We learn in competitive settings. We also need training. We certainly see a development, but one that includes dents.”
Matthias Ginter: “I don’t know that we had a tough start into the match, I felt we were doing fairly well until going behind. Of course, it’s annoying we have to chase the game after such a simple set piece, because it’s difficult here in Cologne, with this pitch and their back five and their long balls. I think we’ve had worse games and won those, so it’s troublesome we dropped points today. The result was okay, but it’s not enough for us.”
Marcel Schmelzer: “Cologne’s goal was my mistake. I cannot lose the ball in that situation and I cannot foul the player afterward. We only look at ourselves. We have to stop making easy mistakes.”
