Thomas Tuchel: “We have a lot to learn still. It’s a learning experience to play in a final, to see Bayern’s sharpness right from kick-off, even though the level of play wasn’t as high as when we met them in March. This game gives you a lot to think about. We need more belief in ourselves and more sharpness when we have the ball. We worked hard and defended passionately, but we failed to give ourselves a breather in possession, we had to few of those. Losing today doesn’t erase our 78 points in the league, but we expected to win and didn’t deliver. It’s another disappointment after the Liverpool match.”
Tuchel on the shootout and next season: “I couldn’t watch it. I’m angry with my own selection in terms of the order of penalty takers. Now it’ll be rebuild for next year.”
Mats Hummels: “This loss is very frustrating no matter against whom it came. We put up a brave fight against Bayern but we didn’t play at our full capacity. Aubameyang had a good chance to win the final in the 85th minute. Everytime you walk by the cup without winning it feels like a stab to the heart.
Hummels on it being his final game for Dortmund: “We could’ve won more trophies in the last few years and losing another final hurts a lot, but I’ll miss each and every one of my team-mates. I have given everything and it was great fighting alongside my team-mates. I’ll miss everything here.”
Roman Bürki: “We fought and tried everything to keep Bayern from scoring. We also had our chances, maybe we could’ve taken one of them. Shootouts always come down to luck and it’s a bit of a mind game. It’s incredibly bitter to lose this way. It looks like bad nerves but I prefer to say it’s bad luck. I got a hand to two penalties but it doesn’t matter because I couldn’t keep them out. Whenever you reach a final you want to win it, and we’ll do everything we can to come back next year.”
