Thomas Tuchel: “I’m very happy and content with the performance we’ve given. We played with great freshness, passion and a good mixture of desire to win and ease. We managed to display our quickness, also in tight spaces, and we had three corners after one minute. Unfortunately we went behind with the first shot of our opponents. I’m happy with the way my team kept playing on, that they stayed confident and that they managed to keep up the tempo in possession until the match was our’s. That was finally the case after the 3-1.
Tuchel (on Mats Hummels): “I thought he was very strong, ever-present. The way we absolutely need him in all phases of the game. I know the critique didn’t fail to leave its mark on him. He had a phase where he lost a bit of confidence. He was thinking during the games. Therefore I’m very happy that he and we went through that. We didn’t make a big deal out of it. Today, Mats rewarded himself with a pre-assist and a goal.”
Mats Hummels: “It was important not only for the team but also for me to score. The goal to make it 2-1 was the key, it opened the door for us to go on and get more. I’m not really sure what to say about my goal. I just hit it and I think it took a slight deflection. It was a good day for us. If we can produce the goods twice more it’ll have been a very good first half of the season for us.”
Hummels (on what the win means to him): “I have to admit, my confidence took a dip in the last few weeks – for the first time in my career. I’ve never experienced anything like that. Thus, this game against Frankfurt, my performance and my goal were good for my self-conception.”
Julian Weigl: “The last home game of the season was something pretty special. The fans really got behind us and I felt the team and the supporters were almost as one today. We pushed each other to more and then we got the win we deserved. Now we have to rebuild our strength every day as we’re going to have to give it everything in the final two games before the winter break.”
