Borussia Dortmund advanced to the round of 32 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. They beat FK Qabala, 4-0, and benefitted from FK Krasnodar winning against PAOK Salonika, 2-1, in Group C’s other fixture.
Here’s what the head coach and players had to say after the game (sources: bvb.de, derwesten.de, ruhrnachrichten.de).
Thomas Tuchel (on Marco Reus’ injury): “He lost his balance in a duel and felt a pulling in his groin area. That was shortly before his goal. He wanted to play on until half-time. We can’t say for sure [if he’s going to be available for Sunday]. It could be he’ll miss the game, it could be he’ll be available.”
Tuchel (on the upcoming Revierderby): “I’m really looking forward to it already, but I’m not feeling it just yet. That will change. There were a few special moments already, like the first home game against Gladbach with a very positive energy. I can immagine there’s a lot more of that when it’s derby time. Today [after the game] I’m not feeling it. But I’ll be ready, don’t worry.”
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (on Reus’ opening goal): “Very important. I was even more focused after I missed a few chances myself. I desperately wanted to score, which I managed to do. But Marco’s early goal was especially important, because it didn’t allow tension to build. It’s nice to be qualified for the next round already.”
Ilkay Gündogan: “It was difficult at the start of the game today. We didn’t find our way into the game and didn’t have the passages of play we imagined. We got better towards the end of the first half and scored two goals from the three, four chances we created. In the second half, we played commandingly. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was important for us to win.”
Gündogan (on advancing to the next round): “It’s of course nice to know we’ve advanced from the group stage. It will be important for us to win the group, that should be our aspiration. Then we can be happy with the group stage.”
Gündogan (on the Revierderby): “I don’t need to say much, everyone knows what that game means for the region, the clubs and both sets of fans. It’s not my first derby, I know how these games go down. We’re all excited, since we’re on a good run of form and we’re catching the game at a good time.”
