Borussia Dortmund jumped to the top of the Bundesliga on Matchday one, beating VfL Wolfsburg comprehensively 3-0. Here are the post-match interviews.
…on the match: “I read everywhere that we would have problems in adjusting [to the new coach]. I didn’t see any problems there. The team did well to follow the coach’s instructions. We were very aggressive on attacking the ball, and still, I thought we had a good mix in winning the ball aggressively and calming the match down. That was a very mature performance. But we also don’t have to overstate this, as it did not come as a surprise to us, because even if there are outside factors like
But we also don’t have to overstate this, as it did not come as a surprise to us, because even if there are outside factors like Neymar [transferring to PSG] that we cannot influence we always had serenity within the club. Again, we mustn’t overstate the win, but it was a very comprehensive performance.”
…on Mario Götze: “It just fills your heart with joy when you see him play football. Either you can play like that or you can’t — but Mario can.”
…on BVB having over 70 percent possession: “[Wolfsburg] know that we have enormous pace up front. And when you push up against us then Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic, and Maximilian Philipp will be rubbing their hands. If you give those three the opportunity to run into space at full pace then it’ll get ugly.”
…on setting a deadline for Dembele to move to Barcelona: “We will give notice to our Catalan friends in some form.”
…on whether BVB are in touch with Barcelona: “No, they know what we want to have. so we don’t have to be in regular exchange. They should tell us whether they want to [make the transfer] or should leave it. Then [Dembele] is back with us at 01. September — there are only those two possibilities.”
…on dealing with Dembélé’s antics: “We should not talk about how this looks for a club that is registered as a stock company but the whole Bundesliga should maybe see how important it is that we are showing strength now. [Dembele’s behaviour] is not only a topic on our doorstep but can affect all 17 other clubs eventually. So they can be happy that we are ramming down a big, fat stop sign.”
…on the match: “It was a good today, it felt great. I’ve seen a very dominant team on the pitch. 3-0 away from home, 75 percent possession: that was a lot of fun.”
…on still needing time: “We still need time. We left off in the 10 minutes before halftime, but over all, it looked like good football today. I’m just happy for us because everyone is busting his ass and working very hard. We’re currently going through a phase where we are surrounded by a lot of turbulence. I think that both club officials and players are doing well to stay focused and thus we won deservedly today.”
…on Ousmane Dembele: “I have my clear opinion on [Ousmane Dembele]. I’ve been asked whether the win was a sign towards him or a sign that we can also do without him. But that would be completely wrong. We need Ousmane Dembele. I would be happy if he is with us going forward. The lad is 20 years old and isn’t doing everything right at the moment.
When he returns, we will talk to him as a team and will give him our opinion on the subject. We will tell him that this is no way to behave. But I’d prefer him to stay on because he is a difference maker.”
…is there a way back for Dembele: “I’m sure that we will find a solution. I can understand his situation, but not the way he is handling it. I also once had the dream to play for a top 3 team. But what he is doing isn’t right.”
…on Pulisic being a replacement for Dembele: “We wouldn’t do [Pulisic] justice if we’d call him a Dembele-replacement. Christian is also a player that can make the difference at any given moment. When he came up to the senior teams I thought he was a bit too calm but now he’s going berserk. He can into a one-against-one situation from a standstill. That’s something we need in our game.”
…on Mario Götze: “I want to read the headline ‘Mario Götze is light-footed’. He showed a top performance today. He was always open to receive the ball, which is very important for me as a central defensive midfielder.”
…on why the team’s structure in possession was so much better than in previous matches: “Because I was on the pitch (laughs). We did it very well today. That’s the idea. Our coach wasn’t happy after the cup match, he clearly stated that. We had a bunch of video sessions and I think that because of that we had structure in our possession.”
…on Marc Bartra’s wonder strike: “I don’t to praise him too much, or he’ll go crazy. In training, he sometimes shoots from 30, 40 meters out, where I can only shake my head. When he was taking the shot today, I was already asking myself what he is doing and then the ball went in.”
…on the win: “Good start. I think today it was a good match and I am feeling well, too. That is very important at the beginning of the season. Everyone needs to know that Borussia Dortmund is ready for this season.”
…on the spirit within the team: “The atmosphere in the team is very good. We are learning more and more every day. Everyone is now understanding what the coach wants. We saw today that we’re improving on a weekly basis.”
You have a close relationship to Ousmane Dembele, are you in contact with him at the moment?
“Yes, all the time. I am in contact with him. It is a difficult situation for him and for the club. That’s all I can say. I understand the club, I can also understand him.”
What are you saying to him?
“Nothing special. It’s his future, so he has to make the decision.”
