Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Wednesday that Neven Subotić will be out for the rest of 2016 due to health problems. A transfer away from BVB will not materialise this summer.
The 27-year-old defender has to undergo surgery on his rib area, which will keep him out for rest the of 2016, as it reads in the club’s official statement. This was the result of a medical examination of an English specialist.
Subotić was on the verge of leaving Borussia Dortmund in the outlook for regular playing time after a successful eight-year-stint at the club, where he “helped to form an era,” as CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told a news conference last week. The centre-back will stay in Dortmund for the time being, working on his recovery.
The Serbian international was close to joining English Premiere League side FC Middlesborough according to local newspaper The Nothern Echo. The newspaper suggest that a €9.5 million transfer fell through due to the medical.
Gute Besserung, Neven!
