FSV Mainz 05 have announced on their official website that the transfer of midfield ace Yunus Malli to Borussia Dortmund is off for the time being.
The statement reads as follows:
“I’ve informed Borussia Dortmund on Monday evening that Yunus will stay in Mainz. This decision wasn’t about monetary aspects – the whole package just didn’t fit for us. Financially, we had found an agreement with Dortmund, but the timing for a transfer just isn’t optimal for us,” explained sporting director Christian Heidel.
“Yunus isn’t only our best goalscorer, but also an integral part of our team. We didn’t want to rip up our team as it is right now.”
Malli, who was informed about Mainz 05’s decision not to accept a transfer in a conversation on Monday evening, reacted understandingly and professionally. “I will keep giving my all for Mainz 05,” the midfielder said.

Dortmund were heavily linked with Malli for a while and now have less than a week left to make a signing which head coach Thomas Tuchel has made clear he thinks the club need.
Malli, whom our tactics expert Constantin Eckner called an “almost perfect fit” for Dortmund, could be a target for the summer now, when a buyout clause rumoured to be in the range of €10 million comes into effect.
