As Thomas Tuchel returns to the Coface Arena where he celebrated many victories throughout his first spell as Bundesliga coach, the 42-year-old has almost the entire roster at his disposal against his former club FSV Mainz 05.
Marcel Schmelzer suffered a thigh strain prior to the Bayern Munich match. Despite having been hopeful of returning to action fairly quickly, Dortmund’s left-back will also miss the clash with Mainz. Tuchel said at the pre-game presser that Schmelzer is making progress and the coaching staff expect him to be fit again on Thursday, when BVB will play at Gabala FK in the third match of the Europa League group stage. His replacement against Mainz should be Joo-Ho Park, who left Mainz for Dortmund this summer.
Meanwhile, Nuri Şahin and Erik Durm, who both have been unavailable for quite a while, are now training intensely, but it is still a long way for them to return to team training.
Surprisingly, every Dortmund player, who was called up for the respective national team, returned healthy from the international break. However, some are a bit tired, as the likes of Kagawa or Aubameyang came back on Tuesday.
