Thomas Tuchel was introduced as the new Borussia Dortmund coach on Wednesday noon. Here are the opening statements of the three protagonists of the news conference.
Hans Joachim-Watzke: “We had a few days to lick our wounds from the DFB Cup final. From today on we are back in battle mode. We will try to steadily approach the next season and to plan. It’s very nice, that we can now present Thomas Tuchel. It was important for us to finish the first season, before we open a new chapter. Today, we won’t talk about transfers nor will we say anything about season targets.”
Michael Zorc: “The first time Thomas Tuchel appeared on our radar was in 2009. when he beat our U19 in the A-Bundesliga final with Mainz’s U19. Even though our team was superior on the individual level, we were without a chance. Thomas is the logical decision for us to assign as new BVB coach. Thomas has a clear footballing philosophy – with and without the ball. His teams were always featured of a highly tactical flexibility. He is able to develop players and teams in the long term. We had many interesting talks in the recent weeks, so I’m extremely looking forward to the future.”
Thomas Tuchel: “First of all hello and thank you to everyone. I’m overjoyed to be now officially a BVB coach. During my time off, I had the great wish to coach a Bundesliga top side. I had the great wish to train a club with a lot of tradition and I had the great wish to coach a true challenger. BVB is a big challenger for me in all competitions that we play in. I find that BVB is a challenger for the top – to win those competitions. I first and foremost meant the, domestic competition, the Bundesliga.
When I say domestic top, I mean that the top has broadened. Not only Bayern Munich, but also VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. We are the challengers for this quartet and as I see it, we have to make up leeway. Leeway also because of the fact, that we have a change on the coaching position now. Bayer Leverkusen has done so already one season ago and have fared quite well. Dieter Hecking has won a title with Wolfsburg and I’m afraid they won’t decline. Lucien Favre is doing extraordinary work at Borussia Mönchengladbach on a incredible consistent level and Pep Guardiola has been on a whole different level with Bayern München.
We also have leeway, because those were the best four teams not only in the first half of the season, but also in the second half of the season. Which implicates to me, that these four teams have learned to string winning streaks together. They have learned to overcome resistances, they managed to defend their positions at the top. These are attributes we will have to relearn and want to stand for.
The most important thing in this time is the time on the training ground. We will have a lot of catching up to do. The Europa League qualification starts soon, which is a massive interference – it isn’t a fundamental disadvantage, but it’s surely not an advantage. Which is why we enter the race for the top four with a little backlog, which is why we are challengers.
It’s extremely important in my view, that we’ll develop a special devotion for this path and that everyone is familiar with our initial situation. It’s important for me that we’ll develop the right attitude on our path. I wish that this attitude will be characterized by diligence, modesty, courage, openness and perseverance. Perseverance will be important, because I want the four teams, that we are challenging, to constantly feel our presence.
I want to create an atmosphere which is perpetrated by commitment and motivation, completely free of egoism. I want to be surrounded by an atmosphere, that has a supportive effect on us at any given moment. This atmosphere has to be palpable on the training ground, but especially for the fans in the stadium. Naturally, it’s in my responsibility to shape this atmosphere and to confer it on my team and on my staff.
In order to achieve that and to act confidently, it is incredible important to me to be able to work in such a reliable club with so reliable structures – which I truly appreciate and is the source of my confidence to fulfill my task. The reliable support of Aki and Michael has been an essential part of my decision and of the positive spirit towards the assignment. The trust of you two to go this path with Borussia Dortmund has truly impressed me from the very beginning and made my decision very easy. This press conference is the right setting to once again sincerely thank you for that.
I find it equally pressing to say, that it was the only way to be the successor of Jürgen. It means on the one hand, that it was a basic requirement for Jürgen to depart amicably with the club management and the club. And on the other hand it goes without saying, that I will treat Jürgen’s outstanding work in the past seven years with the greatest possible recognition. I will accept it and to let his legacy remain with my utmost respect and not to fight it nor to diminish it in any form. Jürgen certainly was more than just a coach here and I want to make clear, that I have acknowledged that. Only on these grounds it’s possible for me to write my own chapter – our own chapter and add to this rich history and to start the sportive progression. I’m completely aware that Jürgen substantially provided the basis for that.
With my entire staff, I’m tremendously looking forward to give everything for that from now on.”
