The German football association has announced on Friday that Matthias Ginter and Sven Bender are called up for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Both could miss the first two games of the season as well as a sizable chunk of Dortmund’s pre-season.

Germany are scheduled to play against Mexico on August 4, against South Korea on August 7 and against Fiji on August 10 in the group stage. Ginter and Bender will certainly miss Dortmund’s encounter with Bayern in the German Supercup on August 14.
If Germany reach the final of the Olympic tournament which will be on August 20, Ginter and Bender would also be unavailable for the cup match in Trier on August 22. The Bundesliga season starts on August 26, with Dortmund playing Mainz at home one day later.
Given Marc Bartra’s late arrival due to the Euro 2016 and an expected departure of Neven Subotic, the only reliable centre-back left to play the Supercup match could be Sokratis. That being said, Dortmund are still interested in signing Leverkusen defender Ömer Toprak who could fill the spot next to Sokratis immediately.
