Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said on Kicker Talk that he is expecting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to be available for Sunday’s game in Mainz after the Striker crashed out of the AFCON with Gabon.
“I expect him to return to Dortmund on Wednesday or Thursday. He will be available against Mainz, as his fitness is at 100 percent,” Watzke said.
Aubameyang will return to the Ruhr area with disappointment after Gabon finished third in their group as hosts of the African Cup of Nations, drawing all three of their group stage games.
It was the 27-year-old, who bottled what was probably the best chance of the game in the scoreless draw against Cameroon last Sunday.
André Schürrle, who replaced the absent Aubameyang in BVB’s 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, showed that he is a more than capable backup. However, Schürrle’s time as a no. 9 might be limited after the club announced the signing of young prospect Alexander Isak, who is set to replace Adrian Ramos as the backup striker.
